88 Minutes

By Ralph Willett

Al Pacino stars in this suspenseful movie, 88 Minutes, as Jack Gramm, a college professor and forensic psychologist for the FBI. A phone call from an unknown caller lets him know he has exactly 88 minutes to live and his time is running out “Tic-Tock-Tock”. As students and friends are brutally murdered around him, he races against time to stop his own death.

The movie opens with a murder and attempted murder of twin sisters. Although the murder scenes themselves use more implied gruesomeness than actual graphic details, it leaves the viewer with the necessary sense of queasiness to really understand the depth of the crime itself.

With the help of his personal assistant, Professor Jack Gramm chases the clues to several similar murders of students and friends, only to find that many of the clues point to him. Convinced that the murders are related to a murder case that he was an expert witness for several years earlier, he struggles to find the connection to the convicted killer who is just hours away from his execution.

More mysterious phone calls with the countdown to his death, “you've got 33 minutes to live, Jack. Tic-Tock-Tock”.

With the clues pointing to the professor, even his long time friend in the FBI assigned to the cases begins to suspect him, leading up to a moment where the agent must decide trust his friend for just a “little more time” or arrest him immediately.

I found myself putting the clues together throughout the movie, trying to guess the “who-done-it” but was completely surprised by the final answer. If you like mystery and suspense, 88 Minutes is a decent movie to spend time with. If you're uncomfortable with violence against women, this movie will really make you squeamish to be sure. Be aware there is some brief nudity and some harsh language but these were mild compared to many of the other movies that carry the same 'R' rating.
